Timing is Everything

Timing is everything, and as I sit here at the end of a long Mother's Day weekend (How's that for timing?), I can't help but believe that most things do happen for a reason.  Or maybe it's just that I have an uncanny ability to make the most of my circumstances.  Whichever it is, I am grateful things most often seem to work out for the best, even if it takes some time to see through to the positive.

As I trained for Providence, I obviously had my sights set on that course, that race, that day.  It was part of my ultimate goal of running a Boston Qualifier, and my confidence after NYC wasn't quite where it should have been to attempt a BQ at Boston this year.  Training for Providence felt more realistic, but as April 20th crept closer and closer, I started to have regrets.  Boston had been the start of this whole life-changing journey, and it felt so strange to be a spectator.  Now, I'll be totally honest, the cruddy weather for Boston this year quelled some of those regrets, because it looked miserable, but I still missed running that race, especially now that I am so tuned into my running.

Grateful for these two!
Now that Providence is in the books, I feel more confident that this is the path my training is supposed to follow.  I didn't get my BQ that day, though I had really hoped it would happen in Providence.  It's been just over a week now, my recovery week, and I love how the timing is playing out.  There are big things going on at school right now, changes and things that are up in the air, and my beautiful daughter attended her first prom this past weekend.  Being able to focus on those things without the pressure of training has been perfect.  We celebrated Mother's Day, and I managed to make some incredible cupcakes without burning them at all...and I ate one!  And fittingly, my thoughtful husband booked me a Mother's Day massage, and the kids got me some new running gear to get me started with a fresh new training cycle.

This is a new beginning, with a new goal race and a different approach to training.  This training cycle will introduce me to some new elements, build a solid foundation, and I know it'll help prepare me for another shot at a qualifying time for Boston 2016.  It'll be, quite literally, a last ditch effort on Long Island on September 13th.  That's two days before the predicted opening for Boston registration, and wouldn't that fall right in line with perfect timing?

Here's a recent article about the Suffolk County Marathon, an inaugural marathon, and hopefully my perfectly-timed race!

Suffolk County Marathon

Today was a rest day...tomorrow I run.  This little runner is ready to tackle Long Island!
